Credant says Lothian USB stick loss is atypical of Police security
London 11th March 09: Credant Technologies, the military grade encryption specialist, says that reports that the Lothian and Borders Police have lost a USB stick containing vehicle registrations and other information is symptomatic of the public sector being under-resourced when it comes to IT security.
"The good news, however, is that we are seeing increasing numbers of emergency services, including the Police, coming to us for advice, and taking our data encryption plus compliance products to bolster their overall levels of security," said Paul Huntingdon, Director Public Services at Credant.
"The emergency services are now taking a lead from the UK government and adopting a pro-active approach to security. Not only are they taking extra security technologies on board, but they are also employing policy enforcement systems as well," he added.
According to Huntingdon with large numbers of staff operating in the field, the UK's emergency services are ideal candidates for centrally- managed end point security technologies such as Credant's Mobile Guardian (CMG) system.
Credant, he explained, has already supplied its solution to several Police Authorities in the UK, as well as also being deployed in some of the centrally driven initiatives around security of Police data residing on mobile devices including PDAs and USB media devices.
"Implementing IT security technology effectively is a lot more than simply installing the required systems. It's also about enforcing the policies surrounding the technology. This is where Credant's technology enters the frame," he said.
"We're gratified to report that those Police authorities that have adopted our technology are able to control the security of their mobile devices, and, perhaps more importantly, enforce their policies on security, quietly and effectively," he added.
