RSA Conference EUROPE 2008 showcased the latest in information security in latest annual gathering

Industry leaders met in London to share strategies to manage the next generation of security threats and issues

by Michael Smith

RSA Conference, the world's leading information security conference, concluded its 9th annual event at ExCeL London on 29th October, 2008. The Conference attracted an audience of international industry experts, senior executives, security professionals, developers, architects and vendors from more than 50 countries and a great conference and show it was. I know, I was there.

Highlights of the RSA Conference Europe 2008 included:
Keynote speakers which included Richard Thomas, the UK's Information Commissioner, and Bruce Schneier, Security Technologist and Chief Technical Officer, BT Counterpane.

Other keynote speakers were:

  • Baroness Neville-Jones, Shadow Security Minister, UK;
  • Art Coviello, Executive Vice President, EMC Corporation and President, RSA, The Security Division of EMC;
  • Ken Silva, Chief Technical Officer, VeriSign; and
  • Dr. Herbert H. Thompson, Chief Security Strategist, People Security.
The RSA Conference Europe 2008 included more than 70 sessions across the following 10 tracks: Business of Security; Developers & Applications; Governance; Hosts; Hot Topics; Networks; Professional Development; Research & Threats; Security Services; and Sponsor Case Studies.

An exhibition featuring new product innovations from 40+ world-class service and technology vendors, including Fortify Software, Integralis, MXI Security, Omada A/S, Optenet, phion AG, SanDisk, Tripwire, Trusted Computing Group, VeriSign, RSA, The Security Division of EMC and WinMagic Inc.

20+ Special Interest Groups (SIGs) offering interactive and hands-on debating forums on topics such as Identity & Access Management Governance, Security Awareness and Social Networking, and What Works and Doesn't Work in Fighting Online Fraud.

Tim Mather, Chief Security Strategist, RSA Conference said: "Organisations today have to deal with a far wider and far more sophisticated variety of security risks than ever before. From attacks on corporate identity and data theft to Trojans, worms or other malware, the threat landscape is constantly evolving as would-be cyber-criminals find new ways to infiltrate corporate networks and computing devices. The challenge for security professionals is to keep pace with industry developments and innovations in order to stay one step ahead of the 'bad guys'."

"RSA Conference Europe is the place where industry leaders meet to discuss the changing threat landscape and share strategies, approaches and new services that will secure the organisations of the future."

Linda Lynch, RSA Conference Europe Manager said: "The Conference is now in its 9th year and once again received strong ratings for its content from delegates. The Conference has a strong and varied programme that remains its key differentiator from other security events. The number of 'Full Conference' delegates was up 6% on the previous year, showing the Conference's continued growth as Europe's premier forum for information security professionals."

"RSA Conference Europe's interactive environment and networking opportunities are repeatedly praised by our attendees and we will continue working hard to facilitate the best debates in the industry. Thanks to all speakers, sponsors and exhibitors, who helped make RSA Conference Europe 2008 the most insightful and interesting event yet."

"We will be looking for a stellar cast of speakers once again for RSA Conference Europe 2009, which takes place on 20th - 22nd October 2009 at ExCeL London. The call for papers will open in February next year."

I can very much recommend the RSA Conference Europe to anyone whose professional interest is in the realm of information security. The conference and the exhibition was expremely good; the conference better than the expo. The latter could do with some more vendors of the right calibre. This is not to say that the calibre of the vendors was not good; it was excellent, but we could have done with more of them. So, in order to avoid disappointment, book your place as soon as possible.

RSA Europe 2008 – Conference & Expo

A visit report

by Michael Smith

October 2008 was the first time in its history that the RSA Conference permitted Bloggers access to the conference and expo with the same status as general – for lack of a better word – media. This shows that the on-line media, and here especially Blogs, are finally getting the recognition they deserve also in this field. From a green standpoint Blogs and media on-line is, I am sure, the way to go.

I would like to use this opportunity to thank the team of the press PR company for all their efforts in making us all welcome and especially here Andi and Andrew and the young lady from Australian whose name, unfortunately, has slipped my mind.

At the same time I would like to extend my thanks to the folks that have given me their time to give me, by ways of press briefings and interviews, a deeper insight into the field on computer security, and my thanks here goes especially to Chris Douglas of MXI Security, as well as Nathalie Sutton of ??PR; then to the Billy and Prajackta of HP, to Klaus Gehri of Phion and to the team of Voltage.

Due to the commitments as to interviews, press briefings and such I do not have had, unfortunately, the chance to see and hear all the conference sessions but...

Over the three days of the conference and expo I have met on a face to face basis with a number of reps of the information security industry and we shall visit their stories and other things that I have learned at that conference in the coming weeks and possibly even months, when we shall be returning again and again to the findings, etc. from the RSA Europe 2008, for there is so much that must be communicated to you, the readers of the ICT Review.

I just hope that I am not going to scare anyone with the stories and the information that I shall be sharing with you.

Many of the readers may possibly get rather scared and concerned when they will read some of what I have learned at the RAS Europe 2008 and which I am going to share with you. Hopefully, though, it will rather wake people up.

The Web, while its benefits, more than likely, I am sure, outweigh its disadvantages, problems and outright dangers, is a dangerous place and this especially to the unwary and to those that have no protection. So, let's be careful out there!

“RSA Conference Europe will continue to encourage thought-provoking discussions on issues that affect our industry in EMEA as well as around the world,” said Linda Lynch, RSA Conference Europe Manager. “Not surprisingly, data security will be one of the most discussed topics at this year’s Conference following a number of high-profile security breaches in the last year in Europe, and in particular in the UK. We’ll have a number of sessions, panels and keynotes focusing on this critical topic, presented by representatives from the European Commission, Symantec, Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, The Ponemon Institute and others.”

"There are a number of security events in Europe that stand out, but the RSA Conference is the most prominent,” said Mike Davies, Director of Identity and Authentication Services at VeriSign. “In addition to technology leaders sharing their thinking and vision for the industry, the conference provides excellent opportunities to network with peers and prospects alike."

This year’s RSA Conference theme is built around Alan Turing – the British cryptographer, mathematician, logician, philosopher and biologist – and will celebrate his legacy and contribution towards digital computers today. Experts and historians agree that Turing had a deeper understanding of the vast potential of computer science than anyone in his era, and is often considered the father of modern computer science.

To celebrate his life and works, RSA Conference Europe has teamed up with Bletchley Park’s Education Department and will be showcasing a number of cipher and enigma machines at the event.

RSA Conference is helping drive the security agenda worldwide with annual events in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Throughout its history, RSA Conference has consistently attracted the world’s best and brightest in the field, creating opportunities for Conference attendees to learn about IT security’s most important issues through first-hand interactions with peers, luminaries and both emerging and established companies.
